Fall 2011 Internship Opportunity at THE HANK KAPLAN BOXING ARCHIVE, with focus on media and moving image preservation.

Appraised in 2008 at over $2.94 million, THE HANK KAPLAN BOXING
ARCHIVE is unarguably the largest and most comprehensive collection of
boxing history in the nation. Kaplan, widely regarded as the nation’s
foremost boxing historian, kept the entire collection in his house and
two-car garage during his lifetime. Featured among the collection are
2,600 book titles, 500,000 rare prints and negatives, 790 boxes of
newspaper clippings from 1890-2007, 300 audiotapes and videotapes,
1200 posters, dozens of scrapbooks, reams of correspondence, and 775
cubic feet of memorabilia, a punching bag Cassius Clay used before
renaming himself Muhammad Ali, as well as a gold cigarette case that
heavyweight Max Baer gave his trainer.
Requirements: Student must be enrolled in a MLS/MLIS, archival
studies, media studies, or preservation program, or have graduated
with a degree in one of these fields. Internship is unpaid, but
academic credit can be arranged.
Hours: Flexible within a Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm framework
Position Description: Intern will work closely with the project
archivist to process a portion of the collection. Intern will be
responsible for rehousing the Media subgroup, which contains
approximately 300 audiotapes and videotapes. Intern will be expected
to create series statements and container listings for the final
finding aid based on their work and adhering to DACS standards, as
well as to write a treatment plan outlining suggestions for the
preservation of the material.
