The School of Professional Studies of the City University of New York (CUNY SPS) has launched sixteen degrees: ten bachelor’s degrees open to students with 24 or more college credits who wish to complete their undergraduate studies, and six master’s degrees, with more programs currently in development. CUNY SPS leads the University in developing and operating online degree programs, and trains faculty throughout CUNY in online instruction. CUNY SPS is also the home of the Joseph S. Murphy Institute for Worker Education and Labor Studies, which offers higher education programs for working adults and union members, and serves as a nationally-recognized center for scholarship and resources for labor, academic, and community leaders seeking a deeper understanding of labor and urban issues.
Reporting to the Associate Director of the Admissions and Advisement Center, the Academic Advisor will work as a member of an advisement team that is responsible for providing proactive academic advising to support the success of undergraduate SPS students. To facilitate the transition of incoming students, the Academic Advisor will meet with incoming students to review their transfer credit evaluations and develop an academic plan to meet their degree requirements. Throughout the students’ academic career, the Academic Advisor will continue to provide proactive advisement to support their students’ progress to graduation. The Academic Advisor will ensure awareness of general college policies and connect students to support services as needed and work closely with academic departments and offices to maintain accurate information about programs and services. S/he will maintain confidential records regarding their interactions with students. As a member of the Admissions and En rollment Management team, the Academic Advisor will assist with departmental activities as needed and participate in School-wide events.
Provides academic counseling and planning services to a diverse student population.
- Assists students with clarifying values and goals; counsels students regarding educational options, requirements, policies and procedures.
- Offers academic and personal support to guide students through the course selection process
- Provides students with effective and timely referral to other college and external support services
- Monitors and evaluates students’ educational progress by conducting academic progress audits
- Establishes and maintains student files, databases and records; prepares activity reports and analyses
- May specialize in providing advice on specific programs or to specific student groups
- Performs related duties as assigned.

A preferred candidate should have:
- 2 years of experience in a higher education setting
- Previous working experience with DegreeWorks
- Previous experience with PeopleSoft and/or CUNYFirst
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel
- Flexibility to work evening hours and occasional weekends
- Ability to work well in a student centered and responsive office
- Ability to establish and cultivate collaborative working relationships with academic offices, administrators, staff, and students
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
- A strong attention to detail and the ability to multi-task
- Demonstrated critical thinking and problem solving skills
