Reporting to the Senior Instructional Designer (LIU Post/Brooklyn) and primarily based at LIU Brooklyn, the Instructional Designer (ID) supports faculty in the design and development of materials and academic courses grounded in sound educational research and best practices in outcomes-driven instructional design. He/she is expected to collaborate with colleagues at the University to effectively integrate the best practices of instructional design and instructional technology through faculty development and the use of multimedia, software, programming, and state-of-the-art technology.

Principal Responsibilities:

• Partner with faculty members and other learning and technology resource persons on design and development of online, blended/hybrid, and web-enhanced courses and programs;
• Create and facilitate faculty development and training courses, seminars, webinars, and workshops;
• Provide one-on-one and group faculty training for web-based pedagogies and learning tools;
• Evaluate and ensure the quality, accuracy, and effectiveness of each course within the context of Quality MattersTM, LIU’s rubric, and university policies;
• Recommend and model active learning strategies for adult learners that address diverse learning styles, abilities, and backgrounds;
• Identify emerging instructional technologies and new instructional applications for existing technologies that may be of interest to the faculty;
• Recommend research-based policies and procedures that improve the course development and revision process, and promote collaboration, partnerships, and relationships among departments;
• Participate in the evaluation and assessment of technologies applied in web-enhanced, blended and online courses and programs;
• Some departmental administrative work, such as planning and executing events for faculty in online training, tracking their participation in OLC workshops, requisitioning marketing materials and supplies, etc.;
• Other duties as assigned by the Senior Instructional Designer.

Qualifications: Master’s degree in educational technology, computer science, or a related field.

• Three to five years of experience in the area of instructional design/technology or related field;
• Demonstrated ability in a range of the following production areas: multimedia development; basic web design and development (e.g., HTML); image and video editing; webinar production and support;
• Experience and competence with media development tools (including social media) and learning management systems (e.g., Blackboard);
• Demonstrated ability in 2 or more of the following production areas: software analysis, design, programming for web-based environments; technology support and comprehensive instructional design (such as active/student-centered learning, authentic assessment, multiple learning styles, information literacy, and relevant use of technology);
• Ability to interact and effectively communicate verbally and in writing in a collaborative and collegial environment; to coordinate and collaborate across departments, and to work as part of a team;
• Comprehensive instructional design theory and experience-such as active/student-centered learning, project-based learning, authentic assessment, multiple learning styles, and information literacy;
• Strong writing, presentation, and editing skills;
• Ability to think strategically and deal with unknowns, while seeking creative solutions to complex issues;
• Other key attributes include creativity, patience, a strong work ethic, and the ability to create good working relationships at multiple levels and across disciplines/departments at the University.

Special Information: Experience using formative and summative evaluation methodologies; prior experience in higher education; background in course design and teaching for varying modes of delivery, e.g., face-to-face, blended, and/or online.
